Works With Your Co-Parenting App
You are already documenting. If you use TalkingParents, OurFamilyWizard or AppClose, every message, every calendar change and every expense request is being recorded, timestamped and kept somewhere you cannot alter. That is exactly what those apps are for, and they do it well.
What they do not do is tell you what any of it means.
Eighteen months of messages is not a record. It is a pile with a timestamp on it. The parent who forwards all of it to a lawyer pays by the hour for someone to read it. The parent who walks into mediation with all of it cannot find the three exchanges that matter. The parent who tries to explain it from memory loses the thread halfway through, because memory is not a filing system.
The difference between the pile and the record is method. The app gives you the pile. Signals & Structure gives you the method. The two are built to work together, and here is how.
Step one: get your export
Each app produces a document you can download. The steps below are current as of September 2026; the apps change their menus, so check their help centers if something has moved.
TalkingParents. Sign in at TalkingParents.com, open Unalterable Records, choose PDF, add the records to your cart and check out. On the Standard and Premium plans the electronically certified PDF is included; on the Free plan it is $49.99. The link arrives by email within 24 hours. Printed records are also available at a per-page charge plus shipping.
OurFamilyWizard. Use the website, not the mobile app; message reports cannot be produced in the app. Open Messages, choose the folder, and click the Report icon. You can export a single message, a selection, or every message in a folder within a date range. Choose oldest-to-newest, include attachments if they matter, and download. The result is a PDF in your Downloads folder.
AppClose. AppClose provides chat export from within the app, with a date range and, in the professional version, an authorization step. The current steps and any fee are in the AppClose Help Center under “export chat communication.”
Whichever app you use, name the file the day you download it: AppName_Record_StartDate_EndDate.pdf. That one habit saves an hour later.
Step two: decide what you are looking for before you read
This is the step most parents skip, and it is why the pile stays a pile.
Before you open the export, write down the question. Not “what did they do wrong,” which is not a question, but something the document can answer. Did exchanges happen on time during the summer schedule? How many times was a medical decision made without the notice the plan requires? What was actually said about the reimbursement, and when?
The question comes from your parenting plan or agreement, not from your feelings about the other parent. If you do not know which obligations your plan actually contains, that is the first thing to fix, and it is what ALIGN, the Parenting Plan Decoder, does: it turns the plan into a plain-language list of who owes what, by when, and how it is supposed to be communicated.
Step three: separate signal from noise
Now read the export with the question in front of you. Every message falls into one of two piles.
Signal is anything relevant to the question that can be verified from the document itself: a message that shows a date, a refusal, a confirmation, a notice given or not given. Noise is everything else, including the messages that made you angriest. A cruel message that has nothing to do with the schedule is noise for the schedule question. It might be signal for a different question. It is not signal for this one.

Step four: look for the pattern, not the incident
One late exchange is a Tuesday. Fourteen late exchanges across six months, each followed by the same explanation, is a pattern, and patterns are what change decisions in mediation, in a parenting coordinator’s office and in court.

Sometimes there is not one, and that is worth knowing too, because it tells you where not to spend your energy. Evidence decays: memories fade, screenshots get lost, context disappears. The timeline built from the export while it is fresh does not.
Step five: keep the record current
Once the first export is sorted, the work is maintenance, not archaeology.
